Simon Howarth

Simon qualified from the Glasgow Veterinary school in 1985. He was a resident in Equine Surgery at the Bristol Veterinary school between 1987 and 1990 and then lectured at the Cambridge Veterinary school until 1992. He worked in private equine referral practice in Rutland until 1996 when he moved to the Damory Veterinary Clinic to develop the equine side of the practice.

Simon has further qualifications in both Equine Surgery and Radiology, and is a Fellow of the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons. His main interests are in equine surgery, lameness and also reproduction.

When not working Simon is kept busy chasing his daughter and her pony, and his sons around the rugby and football fields. Occasionally he escapes it all to the water in a dinghy. Back to top

Julian Radburn

Julian grew up in East Devon and travelled north to study, qualifying from the Royal Dick School of Veterinary Studies in Edinburgh in 1997. After two years spent working in a mixed practice in Wiltshire, he moved to Dorset to focus his attention on horses. He joined Damory Veterinary Clinic in 2002.

Professionally Julian is particularly interested in medical diseases, especially ophthalmology (eye problems) and was awarded the Certificate in Equine Internal Medicine in 2006. He became a partner in January 2009.

Outside work Julian is keen on sport, be it running or mountain-biking locally, skiing in Winter and surfing in the Summer. He lives locally with his wife Lauren and black Labrador Cromarty.  Back to top

Lars Mortensen

After graduating from the Danish Veterinary University in Copenhagen in 2002, Lars completed a six month internship at an equine orthopaedic clinic in Gloucestershire. He then returned to Denmark where he worked in mainly equine practice for another two years. In 2005 Lars returned to England and worked at a large equine hospital before joining Damory Veterinary Clinic in August 2006. Lars enjoys all aspects of equine practice and has a keen interest in equine dentistry and lameness.

In his spare time Lars enjoys fishing, snorkelling, mountain biking and cooking.  Back to top

Mel Wingate

Mel qualified from Liverpool University Vet School in 2004. After a brief spell working in small animal practice in her home town in West Sussex, she then moved to Dorset and joined the equine team at Damory in October 2006 where she has been able to fulfil her long term ambition of working in equine practice. Mel enjoys all aspects of working in general practice and hopes to soon commence study towards an RCVS Certificate in Equine Practice.

Outside work Mel enjoys horse riding and still rides the family pony when she goes home to Sussex. She also enjoys cycling, polo and exploring the Dorset countryside with her crazy Border Terrier  ‘Harry’.  Back to top

Gemma Heads

Gemma qualified from the Royal Veterinary College, London in 2007. She briefly moved up to Lancashire working with equine and farm animals but soon returned to civilisation, moving down to Sherborne to concentrate on equine medicine. Gemma joined the Damory vet team in 2011 and is keen on all aspects of equine medicine, enjoying working with both general riding and competition horses.

Outside of work Gemma enjoys spending time outdoors with her terriers, climbing mountains, paragliding and sailing in Poole Harbour when weather permits!  Back to top

Gladys Quick

Gladys is the equine secretary and co-ordinates the equine team. She will probably be your first point of contact when telephoning the surgery to book visits or discuss equine matters. As a horse owner herself you can be assured of a sympathetic ear!  Back to top
